UAE activates Airport Emergency Plan – What it means for travellers
Flyers receive accommodation and updates after Iran-Israel tensions impact routes
DUBAI: As escalating tensions between Iran and Israel triggered regional airspace closures, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has taken swift action to ensure its airports remain fully operational.
The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security (ICP) confirmed the activation of an emergency plan to support inbound and outbound passengers, with around-the-clock coordination and crisis measures in place.
Over the past week, countries including Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Syria, and Israel temporarily shut their airspace, resulting in widespread cancellations and flight rerouting. With approximately 1,400 flights passing daily through the Middle East – linking Europe, Asia, and the Gulf – the impact of these closures has been far-reaching.
Around-the-clock teams
To minimise disruption, the ICP deployed field teams across UAE airports, supported by highly trained personnel and operational technologies available 24/7. These teams have been tasked with facilitating immigration procedures, guiding travellers, and supporting airlines with rescheduling efforts. The ICP confirmed that the emergency business continuity plan was activated as soon as the regional developments unfolded.
In addition, coordination with strategic stakeholders in aviation has ensured that regulatory and logistical measures were executed without delay, helping maintain the flow of air traffic.
Assistance for stranded travellers
Special attention has been given to stranded passengers, many of whom faced overnight delays or rerouted travel plans. The ICP provided temporary accommodation, real-time logistical support, and timely information to reduce stress and confusion during the disruption.

Dubai Airports and Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi advised passengers to monitor airline updates closely, as evolving conditions may result in further unexpected schedule changes.
Airlines have also issued alerts urging passengers to confirm travel plans in advance.
Streamlined entry systems
The emergency plan also introduced a streamlined process for passenger entry at UAE airports, ensuring smooth movement in line with the changing operational demands. ICP support teams were positioned at key points to offer direct assistance and ensure coordination with airline partners for rapid response.
The authority expressed appreciation for travellers’ cooperation and confirmed its continued commitment to safety, high service standards, and international best practices, regardless of external emergencies.
Meanwhile, global risk monitoring platforms such as Safe Airspace and Osprey Flight Solutions continue to advise airlines to exercise extreme caution across the region, warning of potential long-term impacts on global aviation routes, logistics, and fuel costs.
